Privacy Policy

Effective Saturday, October 24, 2026

This covers what we collect when you use You Should Hear This, why, and what you can do about it. The short version: what you put on a billboard is public, your email isn't, and we don't sell anything about you.

1. Who we are

1.1Who runs this

You Should Hear This (youshouldhearthis.com) is run by its site owner, in California. Questions and requests about your information go to the site contact at hello@youshouldhearthis.com.

2. What we collect, and why

2.1Your billboard is public

Your billboard's words, photo, signature name and website are shown to everyone: on the site, in The Basement and in share images, for as long as the site runs.

2.2Your email stays private

We ask for your email at checkout to send your receipt and news about your billboard, like a problem with it or a Hype or Heckle landing on it. We also use it to apply booking limits and to block repeat copyright infringers. It's never shown on the site. We never sell it, and we don't send marketing email.

2.3Payments

Stripe handles payment. Your card details go straight to Stripe and never touch our servers. Stripe tells us whether you paid, how much, and a payment ID.

2.4Your agreement at checkout

For each purchase we keep a record of the two boxes you ticked, when you ticked them, and which version of the Terms you agreed to.

2.5Photos

When you upload a photo, we re-encode it and strip its metadata, including any GPS location your phone added. We keep a fingerprint of each photo so a banned image can't be uploaded again. Photos that don't end up on a paid billboard are deleted after about a week.

2.6The content check

Before a billboard can be booked, its words and photo go to Anthropic's Claude API for an automated check against the Rules. Your email and payment details aren't part of it.

2.7IP addresses

We use your IP address to limit how fast anyone can use parts of the site, so nobody can flood it, and we store it only scrambled (hashed). Our hosting provider's request logs also record IP addresses for a short time.

2.8The "heard" counter

When the counter is on, it counts views with an identifier made by scrambling your IP address together with a value that changes every day. Once the day ends, that daily value and the identifiers made with it are deleted, so the counter can't follow you from one day to the next; only each billboard's total stays. It doesn't use cookies, and link-preview bots don't count.

2.9Cookies and your browser

The public site sets one cookie, and only when you upload a photo: it remembers which photos you uploaded, so the editor can show them to you before they've been checked. Your browser only sends it back when it loads a photo from this site, and it expires 7 days after your last upload.

The editor saves your design in your own browser so you don't lose it; it stays on your device until you book, or until you clear this site's data in your browser. The admin area uses cookies to keep its one admin logged in.

3. Who else handles it

3.1The companies that run the site with us

These companies handle data for us, and only what their job needs: Stripe (payments), Anthropic (content checks), Supabase (our database and photo storage), Vercel (hosting) and Resend (email).

4. How long we keep it

4.1How long we keep it

Billboards and their purchase records stay for as long as the site runs: The Basement is the archive, and we need purchase records for taxes and refunds. Photos that never ran and checkouts that were never paid are deleted after about a week, and rate-limit counters after a day.

5. Your choices

5.1Asking us to remove something

Email hello@youshouldhearthis.com to ask us to remove your name or website from a billboard, take a billboard out of The Basement, or delete your email from our records. We keep only what the law requires for payment records, and we'll tell you when it's done.

5.2California privacy rights

If you're in California, you can ask what personal information we have about you and ask us to delete it, at hello@youshouldhearthis.com. We don't sell or share personal information for advertising.

5.3Do Not Track

Browsers can send a "Do Not Track" signal. We don't track you across other sites to begin with, so the site works the same either way.

6. Kids and changes

6.1Not for children

The site isn't for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child under 13 gave us information, email us and we'll delete it.

6.2Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll post the new version here with a new effective date.
